Aboriginal Coastal Licenses

Tiwi Islands Inter-tidal Agreement

As part of the Blue Mud Bay agreement, the Northern Territory Government changed the Aboriginal Coastal Licence to ensure it is more viable for Aboriginal people wanting to catch and sell fish.

Tiwi people who want to catch or trap fish and give them away do not need a licence.  An Aboriginal Coastal Licence is only needed for Tiwi people who want to catch or trap fish and sell them to others, including local shops. An Aboriginal Coastal Licence is also needed for Tiwi people who want to use large nets – up to 100 metres with 65 mm mesh.

To apply for an Aboriginal Coastal Licence, contact the Tiwi Land Council or the NT Department of Primary Industry and Resources.
